Life after Cities for Climate Protection - A new climate change landscape for Australian local government
Monday, 13 July 2009
The Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) Program ended on 30 June 2009. As a result, many Councils are considering their options for how to continue with their energy and greenhouse programs.
Planet Footprint's Scorekeeping Service is a powerful way forward. It is a way to take your energy and greenhouse programs to a whole new level of effectiveness, efficiency and credibility, with very little financial or staff time investment. In particular, Planet Footprint is currently offering Councils involved with the former CCP Program some specific tools, support and advice to help them make the transition from CCP to a new regime of low-investment/high return energy and greenhouse management.
Planet Footprint is offering to work with Councils involved with the former CCP program that subscribe to the Planet Footprint Scorekeeping Service to develop a 'greenhouse status report' that can be used to present where Council has been, where it is currently at, and where it is going with its greenhouse programs. This will provide a succinct summary of greenhouse program history for Council, that can be presented directly to specific audiences (e.g. Council, community), or attached to reports. It will serve as a transition between Council's previous approach to greenhouse via CCP, and Council's new approach.
If you have dismissed Planet Footprint up until now as 'just another greenhouse program', or as a data collection service only, your assessment falls way short of what it is we actually do.
Planet Footprint is not a substitute, alternative or replacement for any current or former greenhouse initiative, whether that initiative be an external one like CCP, or an in-house initiative.
Planet Footprint is not 'another environmental program'. Planet Footprint is not a consulting firm. Planet Footprint is not a data firm. Planet Footprint does not sell greenhouse software.
Planet Footprint is an Environmental Scorekeeper. We are the only local government environmental scorekeeper in Australia. Planet Footprint continuously and independently measures and reports your energy, water, fleet, waste, streetlighting and greenhouse performance.
As an environmental scorekeeper, Planet Footprint is a necessary complement to any internal, external or regional energy or greenhouse initiative.
Planet Footprint is a vital Service that sits above everything Council does in terms of energy, greenhouse and environmental initiatives. You may be developing your own in-house greenhouse initiative. You may be taking a regional approach to energy and greenhouse. You may even be looking to join another third-party program to replace CCP.
Whatever it is you do, you must have continuous access to nationally consistent, independent and comparable data that shows your Council's energy and greenhouse performance. Without this, you'll be unable to measure the effectiveness of your energy and greenhouse initiatives. You'll be 'flying blind'.
If you intend to take on the measurement process yourself, or use utility management software, you'll risk spending most of your time working with data, and not enough time managing and improving (not to mention being stuck with datasets that may be inaccurate, incomplete, and certainly unable to be benchmarked with the performance of any other Council).
Planet Footprint not only measures and reports your energy, water, fleet, waste, streetlighting and greenhouse performance....
It carries out this measurement and reporting continuously. It carries out this measurement and reporting independently.....with minimum involvement from your staff (we extract your performance data for electricity, gas, streetlights and water direct from utilities). It shows your performance over time. It shows your performance compared to the performance of hundreds of other properties and Councils across Australia. It gives this information to you on demand...whenever you need it. And...most importantly.....
Planet Footprint puts a team of sustainability experts at your disposal to help you apply environmental scorekeeping to your organisation in order to save energy, water, fuel, money, your reputation (and, of course, the world).
Planet Footprint guides you to not just receive powerful performance information, but to put the information into practice. To that end, we deliver case studies, quick guides and short courses to help you apply your Planet Footprint service to:
- Establish a solid Scorekeeping regime
- Act on anomalies
- Set targets and track progress towards them
- Find savings opportunities and act on them
- Manage your reputation
- Ensure accountability and encourage ownership among site and asset managers, senior management and elected members, and general staff
- Comply with reporting requirements of voluntary and mandatory programs
We do all of this without fuss, and with minimal impact on the day to day routine of Council staff.
We are not another burdensome program for your staff to follow. We are a streamlined, organised, independent service provider designed to meet the specific needs of Australian local government.
We deliver our service as an annual subscription. You pay between $1500 and $4000 per year to have Planet Footprint act as Council's independent environmental scorekeeper, giving you access to the full suite of powerful reports, data, tools and support developed just for LG.
Subscription to the Planet Footprint Scorekeeping Service ensures you have independent, transparent and hassle-free monitoring and reporting of your performance. This enables you to spend less time fiddling with internal spreadsheets and software, and more time coordinating improvement actions for your Council and the community.
Over 150 Councils subscribe to Planet Footprint's Scorekeeping Service for Local Government.
